WEEK 4: "Wizard Japes"
In the last week of Term 4 2010 Taylor had to choose a Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel as a basis for a series of assignments and she chose Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling. I love the HP books and movies and have been trying to get Taylor to read them for a long time with no success. Once she started, she quickly became obsessed with anything Harry Potter. She had to watch all the movies, in order, the last three in one day so that she could go to see the new film with a friend for her friend's birthday. In the midst of this Harry Potter fest, Ronin, who would up until this point never watch a HP movie, got swept along and soon he was watching all the movies also. In January, when Jake was here, we all went to see the latest film together. For Christmas, both of the kids had Harry Potter items on their list. Ronin's included Lego Hogwarts and a few other Lego HP pieces. Taylor's HP list was quite extensive! Her number one item was a couple of electronic Harry Potter Battling wands. Searching the internet I was excited to find a set of 12 for only $35! I couldn't believe it! I checked and double checked and as it was a very reputable online store we had used many times I ordered it. Not only did it not come until the 3rd week of January, but only ONE wand arrived! It turned out to be a mistake by the store and I was compensated. I will have to source another one for her so they can actually "battle"!! In the meantime, they are having some fun with the single wand! And watching those movies, over and over again!
WEEK 5 - "Surprise Visit"
We had planned a few days away with the kids but Chris had to go away for the entire week so we decided to postpone it til the end of the next week. Sometimes things are meant to be, because if we had taken the trip we wouldn't have been home for Belinda to visit us with Rhylie and Hunter on that Saturday. She was in Kapooka, near Wagga, for her brother's Army passing out parade, so she drove to visit Canberra, a quick visit for the kids to visit their grandmother, then a quick visit with us as well. It was the first time we had met Hunter, even though he is 15 months old, so we were VERY excited! it was brief, but wonderful! AND I managed a very quick little photo shoot! They drove back to Sydney to visit overnight with Jason and Rebecca before an early morning flight back to Townsville on the 30th. It wasn't til they got home they found out that Cyclone Anthony was due to hit FNQ the next day and Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi was heading their way. Anthony avoided Townsville but it was another day or so before they discovered just how bad things were expected to be, with Yasi due to land between Townsville and Cairns. It was so large it would severely effect both cities and everywhere in between and around, including the islands. They spent the night of 2nd February in their walk-in robe with their kids, listening to the Cyclone knocking down trees and fences outside but they came through unscathed, unlike Tully, Mission Beach and Cardwell which were decimated by the Category 5 Cyclone's full fury. However, thanks to building codes, the advance warning system and emergency services, the result wasn't as bad as it could have been. Days later we are still seeing the results of ex-TC Yasi's tail end here in Canberra and even more so in Melbourne, where they have had extensive flooding. It was the worst storm in Australia in generations.
Cheers,
TRACEY xx
